This site is deliberately a regional calendar. The home page carries the best of what's on from the Smokies to the High Country — the things worth a drive — and it stops there on purpose. It is not trying to list every trivia night in Hendersonville.

So once you know which corner of the mountains you're headed to, go local. Below is where we look ourselves: the town-by-town calendars, the venues that book their own rooms, and the agencies that run the public lands. Most of it is a better source than any aggregator, ours included.

The other [Place]What sites

Full disclosure: these four are ours. We build a separate calendar for each place rather than one bloated regional list, because a Boone weekend and a Bristol weekend have nothing to do with each other. Each one runs its own scrapers against its own venues.

The mountains don't stop at the state line and neither do we; plenty of people here drive to Knoxville for a show without thinking twice about it.

Asheville and Buncombe County

Asheville has the deepest calendar in the region and the most places to read it.

• Mountain Xpress — the alt-weekly's calendar is still the most complete listing of what's actually happening in town, clubland included.
• Explore Asheville — the official visitor bureau calendar; strong on festivals and the big-ticket stuff.
• Romantic Asheville — independently run, and unusually good at seasonal roundups.
• The big music rooms book their own: The Orange Peel and The Grey Eagle.
• The Folk Heritage Committee runs Shindig on the Green and the Mountain Dance & Folk Festival — old-time and bluegrass, free on summer nights.
• For exhibitions and craft: the Asheville Art Museum and the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Hendersonville, Flat Rock, and Brevard

• Visit Hendersonville — apple country, Main Street, and the Henderson County calendar.
• Explore Brevard — Transylvania County, the Land of Waterfalls, and the white-squirrel end of things.
• Brevard Music Center — the summer festival season, posted well in advance and worth planning around.
• Flat Rock Playhouse — the State Theatre of North Carolina, with its own season calendar.

Waynesville, Sylva, Bryson City, and Cherokee

• Visit NC Smokies — Haywood County: Waynesville, Maggie Valley, and Lake Junaluska.
• Discover Jackson County — Sylva, Dillsboro, and Cashiers.
• Explore Bryson City — Swain County and the railroad, at the park's back door.
• Visit Cherokee — the Eastern Band's own site for the Qualla Boundary: the fair, the museum, and Harrah's calendar.
• Folkmoot — the international folk festival based in Waynesville each summer.

The High Country

Boone and its neighbors are an hour-plus from Asheville and function as their own world — ski season, App State, and the northern Parkway.

• Explore Boone — the Watauga County calendar, including Blowing Rock and Banner Elk.
• Appalachian Theatre of the High Country — the restored downtown Boone house, booking music and film.

Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley

• Black Mountain-Swannanoa Chamber — the valley's own listings, and the town that took Helene hardest of the ones close to Asheville.
• LEAF Global Arts — the spring and fall festivals at Lake Eden, plus year-round programming.

The public lands

Half of what's worth doing here isn't on anyone's events calendar, but the agencies do post programs and closures — and the closures matter more than the programs.

• Great Smoky Mountains National Park — ranger programs and seasonal activities.
• Blue Ridge Parkway road closures — check this the morning of any Parkway drive between November and April.
• National Forests in North Carolina — Pisgah and Nantahala alerts, trail and road status.
