Field guide · the national park

The Great Smoky Mountains, from the North Carolina side

The most-visited national park in the country starts at your back door. The NC gateways — Oconaluftee, Cataloochee, Deep Creek — without the Gatlinburg traffic.

Five ways in from the NC side

Tennessee gets the billboards; North Carolina gets the quiet entrances. The five that matter:

Newfound Gap and the crest

US-441 (Newfound Gap Road) is the only paved road over the crest of the Smokies, climbing from Cherokee to Gatlinburg over Newfound Gap. The overlooks on the climb are some of the best roadside views in the East, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the road at the gap. The road can close for snow and ice in winter — check status before you commit to the drive.

Know before you go

The park itself has no entrance fee, but since 2023 a parking tag is required to park anywhere in the park for more than 15 minutes (a small daily, weekly, or annual fee under the “Park It Forward” program). Buy one online or at a visitor center. Cell service is essentially nonexistent inside the park, so download maps first.

Official trail closures, road status, and the parking-tag details are on the park site: nps.gov/grsm.

Road, trail, and fee details change with the seasons — confirm current conditions at nps.gov/grsm before you head out.
